Tips for Senior Citizens

I read recently  the following  interesting article by Letty Jacinto -Lopez giving very valuable tips to the Senior citizens and I share the same here:

At their 54th anniversary, my friends made a decision to distribute their
combined assets among their living heirs. Their rationale, Para walang gulo

. (To avoid trouble). They added one proviso: While still alive, income

from these properties will be used to maintain our present lifestyle
inclusive of medical expenses, extravagant trips and unlimited shopping.

That's easy, replied the heirs. The income was substantial to indulge the

old folks with a bonus that the heirs can use in any manner they wanted.

The first year passed without a hitch, but soon the problem surfaced. Each

child used all kinds of tactics to keep the money from his parents. It

reached a point where the poor retirees had to beg for sustenance, robbing
them of the dignity they worked hard to uphold.

What went wrong?
Bad decision, said a cautious friend who warned the couple of this scenario

. Children are so unreliable when it comes to inherited money. Money

received, which was not expected and not a direct result of something they
worked for, is not given the same value as money earned with their own
sweat and tears. They lose their sense of propriety; gratitude is tainted
by greed and decency gone. This is compounded by in-laws who can tilt or
convince their respective spouses to throw out good sense and filial
affection like soiled rugs, Honey, they're going to die anyway, so why
waste good money on them?

To avoid falling into this vulnerable, pitiful state, keep these 10 tips in

mind:
1. Do not retire. If you're over-aged, retire and get all the benefits but

find another income-generating job or open a business that will keep you

active physically and mentally. Travel and bond with true friends, play a
sport, learn a new hobby and volunteer in your community or parish. Don't
loaf around. Your spouse will hate you because you've become a sloppy,
listless bum with nothing good to say about the household and things that
you never bothered about before. Solve crossword puzzles, play Scrabble,
write your memoirs, and above all, read ...this will keep you alert and
keep Alzheimer's at bay.

2. Live in your own place to enjoy independence, privacy and a solo life.

If you move in with your children, your rank or degree of importance is

reduced to that of a bed spacer who has no place of honor or, worse, like
crumbling furniture merely displayed with no added value. Might you kowtow
to conform to their own rules that are not kind, considerate or mindful of
you? If you witness your children engaged in a war of will and wits with
your grandchildren, whom will you side with? Will they even appreciate your
arbitration? Remind your children that silence is not a sign of weakness;
you are merely processing data that is taking longer to complete.

3. Hold on to your nest egg, bank deposits and assets. If you want to help

your children, do give, but not to the extent that you wipe out your life's

earnings, singing heroically not a shirt on my back nor a penny to my name.
Staying solvent and in the black is a good hedge against all kinds of
tempests. You will sleep better, you will not be afraid to express your
opinion and you will be confident about yourself.

4. Don't believe your children's promise to care for you when you grow old.

Priorities change. Many children are not guilt-ridden or filled with a

sense of moral obligation when the wife and offspring take top billing in
their lives. There are still children who would consider it a privilege to
show compassion, genuine love and deep concern for their parents but be
warned that not all children think alike.

5. Expand your circle of friends to include young ones who will definitely

outlive your old BFFs. Keep up with new inventions, trends, music and

lifestyle including all the scams and schemes you should guard against.
Remember that when you mix with the young, you also open a fresh avenue to
channel your thoughts, experiences and values through so that the lessons
you learned are not lost, forgotten or buried with you.

6. Be well groomed and smelling fresh of spring water all the time. There's

nothing more depressing than seeing people exhale when you walk by because

you reek of baul (camphor chest) or lupa (dirt). Old age or bust, don't
look and smell like a corpse when you're not one yet.

7. Do not meddle in the life of your children. If they ask for your

counsel, give it, but be ready to accept that they may not take it. Their

situations in life cannot be compared to the situations that you
experienced in your life. The playing field has changed and they need to
develop their own set of survival skills. If you raised them to be street
smart, they can handle themselves in tough situations and be able to read
people. Champion and encourage their dreams and desires but on their own
terms.

8. Do not use old age as your shield and justification for turning grumpy.

There's nothing more annoying than an arrogant, old fool. Welcome each day

as another chance to be kind and forgiving, to yourself and to others.

9. Listen to what others may say. Do not throw your weight around just

because you are a septuagenarian or a nonagenarian. You are not a

depository of knowledge. Even if the roles have been reversed, make growing
old a fun-filled, pleasant experience for you and your brood.

10. Pray always and focus on your eternal life. You will definitely leave

everything behind, a final journey detached from burden and care. Be more

accepting that, sooner, not later, you will croak. Prepare your swan song
with a humble and contrite heart. If you believe in a merciful and loving
God, there is no need to strut like a star. Nobody is.

My observation :

Though the author has mentioned that children are unreliable

when it comes to inherited money, there are many children who are really taking
care of their parents in their old age and still there are many  joint families living
together happily. We have to appreciate such children who are not spoiled by the
modern world.

Mistakes in sending emails which we should avoid

There are many ways to send an email and while sending an email precautions to be taken to avoid some mistakes which will irritate the receiver of the mail.

Let us see how to avoid such mistakes:

1. Reply All

This is one of those buttons that we like to hit so that everyone is kept in the ‘loop’, the problem is not everyone needs to be kept in the loop, nor do they want to be. It is fine to hit reply all, but be sure to edit the list of people that you are replying to so only those needed in the conversation stay in the email chain. If you are even in doubt about when to use reply all, don’t use it.

It is better to forward an email to someone later on then to waste 50 peoples time reading email that they don’t care about.

2. Emails with unwanted CC field

Let me tell you about the CC field, it is used to keep people in the loop that need to be kept in the loop. What it is not for is to be used as a way to show me that you are doing your job, or to ask me to do something. When I get an email that I have been CC’d in and somewhere in that message there is a task you want me to do – 90% of the time I miss that task. The reason is simple:I don’t read emails I am CC’d in past the subject line.

If you want someone to respond or act on an email you send ,make sure that he/she is in the ‘TO’ field.

3. Adding JPG of My Company Logo

It is really awesome that you figured out how to embed your company logo in your email signature, but I know who you are and what your company logo looks like.  Don’t waste bandwidth sending me email attachments of your logo.

Further it really irritates me when I go to look for emails that you sent me a file in – every email you send me has an attachment.

4. Lengthy contact information

We all have those fancy email signatures that include our contact information and maybe even a vCard, they definitely say our name and title. These are great for people who don’t know you, but when you are corresponding with other people in your office and regular contacts ,your first name will suffice.

5. Stop With the Cryptic Subject

We need to tell people what the email is about in the subject line, so that they know if they need to open it now or not. For instance instead of saying “Report”
as your subject how about put the actual subject in – “Please Review My TPS Report” so that  I know whether to read that now or later

6. Sending Large Files

Most people  never look at the file size that they are sending to people, they just know that if it bounces back they can’t send it as is. I would ask that if your email is over 3mb please send me a file link so that I can download it faster.

There are many  services out there that do this, many that are so fast and easy you will be amazed. Sending and downloading large files over email is not what the protocols were designed for, and they are agonizingly slow – help yourself out and use a service like Droplr, file sharing, etc.

7. Capitalization

If you send me an email in all caps I will assume you are yelling at me and take my damn sweet time responding. Likewise if you send me an email in all lowercase I will assume that you couldn’t care less about the email you sent; resulting in me taking my own time responding. Typos and grammar problems abound, but we all know how to properly capitalize an email, so don’t be lazy.

8. Keep It Short

It is really great that you like details, but I don’t have time for them. Tell me what I need to know and what you need from me.
Don’t waste my time asking about the weather or how business is going. Being concise in emails can often lead to people thinking that you don’t have the time for them – I am not talking about one line email responses (ala Steve Jobs), just say what you need to say in a clear and concise manner. This helps people better understand you and makes you look smart.

9. Legal Notices and Printing Notices

Drop the legal notice, it is just dumb amd makes you look paranoid. Drop the “be kind to the environment and don’t print this email” notices because it is just rude.

If I need to print the email I will, otherwise assume it is filed away on my computer never to be revisited.

10. Spamming people with dumb jokes that they might not appreciate

This is the biggest email irritation. I hate it when people I don't send email jokes to, keep sending me email jokes that they think are 'relevant' to me. If I send you regular emails including jokes, I have that kind of relationship with you and it is fine to respond accordingly. If not, it would be smart to take a hint and stop bothering me - smart people don't care for the hidden messages
and crude jokes under business-like headings. Understand your audience and mark them in accordingly.

15 Self Defense Tips for a Woman Alone

Most men will never understand what it is like being a woman alone on the street. Where men walk with confidence, certain they can deal with most physical threats, a woman doesn't have that sense of confidence. Many women are scared every day, because they know that if a man decides to attack them, they won't stand a chance against his enhanced strength.

That is why women carry pepper spray and rape whistles, but even those only work part of the time, and that's if the woman had time to get to them. It's just as important to be aware of a few simple tips and techniques that can help you escape or survive your attack unmolested.

Here are 15 tips and tricks to help you out if the worst happens:

1. Show that you're aware: Show the environment that you are aware of what's happening around you. Potential assailants prefer women that seem distracted or preoccupied. If you look assertive and aware, they might never initiate the assult.

2. Prepare your body: If you sense danger, immediately go to a starting fighting position. Move your hands close to your chest, place your right foot a bit ahead of the left and tilt your body forward. Your body is now ready for a physical confrontation.

3. Don't let the hair get in the way: Many attackers will choose the hair as an easy target to grab. It's better to let your hair out and tuck it into your collar.

4. Have a weapon to reach for: An umbrella, a set of keys or a pen can make all the difference in a moment of crisis. Remember where they are and be prepared to draw them if you feel threatened.

5. Call for help: Calling for help may not provide it but it may scare the attacker enough to allow you to escape. Many women get confused and don't know what to scream. Shouting 'fire' for instance, can be better and more attention grabbing than simply yelling 'help'.

6. Know the weak spots in the body: If you do find yourselves in a physical confrontation, you can scratch, pull, hit or grab, as you aim directly to one of the five weak spots: Eyes, nose, neck, knees and groin!
self defense

7. Don't be scared to fight: Many women are scared to strike back because they are scared of their assailant's anger, or are afraid to hurt themselves. The punch you give may hurt you, but the pain is minor and if it's enough to allow you to escape - it's well worth it.
8. Take and oppurtunity to run: If you've identified a good time to run away from the confrontation, do it. Escaping is always better than confronting, and these oppurtunities will not present themselves a second time.

9. Keep your ears open: Don't listen to music while walking through a bad neighborhood, and don't play things on your cellphone. You should be aware of your surroundings and be able to hear your attackers coming.

10. Use things around you: Look for stuff that might scare him away, break a window, turn on a car alarm or let some trash cans fly.

11. Remain calm: The worst thing is to panic. This is of course a very stressful situation, but keeping your cool will do much more to save you.

How to escape various holds:

1. Chocked from the back: Use your heel to scratch the attacker's lower leg, inflicting sharp pain he can't ignore.

2. Held from the back: Hit your head backwards or kick your heel in the direction of the crotch.
self defense

3. Head squeeze: Take hold of his leg to get him to lose his grip and fall.
4. Escaping a choke hold: Bend down and lean forward. Give him a good head butt on the chin so he bites his tongue, and finish with a stronng kick to the groin.
self defense
